Niagara needs to stop the needless euthanasia of healthy animals(which is a form of animal cruelty) and support the establishment of a High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic to serve all of Niagara. The cat overpopulation in Niagara has reached epidemic proportions and is not being addressed by the traditional methods of control;there are a number of reasons why this crisis exists, such as the irresponsible and abusive behaviour that is so often perpetrated against vulnerable and defenceless animals; but at the root of the problem is the fact that there is a severe lack of affordable spay/neuter services such as are presently operating successfully in Newmarket and Barrie;such facilities can perform over 5000 surgeries per year, which greatly reduces the widespread cases of unwanted litters as well as address issues related to stray and feral populations; a humane and caring society cannot rely solely on the work of already established groups and stakeholders who are overwhelmed by this escalating problem; as a member of a concerned and compassionate community, we ask for your signature of support for our efforts in making a high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter clinic a reality in the Niagara Region. Ald. Berry of Grimsby is reported as arguing that dog owners who pay for licenses are paying or subsidizing for costs incurred by the LCHS because it picks up far more cats than dogs; this assertion is really a red herring and actually deflects from the real issue; for one thing, this is not about dog vs. cat or even the cost for cat licensing which is trivial compared to what individual owners and cat caretakers spend on a daily basis; councillor Berry is missing the point and ignoring the root cause of the problem; in addition, he ignores the fact that taxpayer dollars(much more than dog licence fees) through municipal contracts are already paying for LCHS services...not to mention taxpayer dollars from provincial and federal governments and ongoing fundraising and public donations; I,for one, am not gullible enough to believe that there is some sort of shortfall for whatever reason and blaming the cats is both disingenuous and unconscionable.
